Travis Whitehead
Reporter for The Monitor
McAllen, Texas
Mr. Whitehead was able to bring to light the plight of homeless persons in Hidalgo County. He has covered the last two submissions of the Continuum of Care grant applications and 24 hour point-in-time studies. He has also focused stories on individual persons and their lives. Mr. Whitehead was able to bring together family members who lost track of each other. |

Mr. Love brings knowledge of the needs of the community, the experience of diverse successful leadership and excellent credentials to his position. He has been gifted with an equally passionate staff who, each in their own quirky way, have formed a strong team that embraces his vision and is excited for each new day and the possibilities that it holds.

Mike Doyle

Mr. Doyle has served on many boards and task groups in the community as both an advocate for the homeless and as a concerned individual that wants to make sure everyone understands the real facts about the homeless and their needs. He has served on the Day Resource Center, The Mayor’s Task Force for the 10 year plan to end Chronic Homelessness, Mayor’s task force on Shelter Care, The Tarrant County Workforce Solutions Board, and the Texas Homeless Network Board. He carries the needs of the homeless, providers, and the political, business and faith communities everywhere he goes across town and across the nation.

Carolyn Meyer,
Holy Spirit Catholic Church Homelessness & Hunger Ministry
This task force is over two and one-half years old, primary function of the group is identifying worthy projects in the arenas of the homeless and hungry in the San Antonio area and raising and distributing the funds. Gifts include funding for specific items, such as vehicles for the Food Bank, washers and dryers for shelters and donations for specific food items for homeless children. The Task Force has also been active in the educating and persuasion of the members of the San Antonio City Council and its staff of the need for increased support in the city budget for homeless activities.

Twain Tharp

North East ISD, McKinney Project
North East ISD is in its seventh year of providing support to homeless children and youth through the McKinney Project. The McKinney Project receives grant funds which assist children in being successful in school. Mr. Tharp has been described as “a leader of dreams” showing enthusiasm and determination instead of skepticism. He is innovative and passionate with implementing new programs that benefit all children. |
Outstanding Homeless Advocate:
Richard Troxell
Austin, Texas
Mr. Troxell is the Founder and President of House the Homeless, Inc. and is the Director of Legal Aid for the Homeless. Mr. Troxell is a Board of Directors member of the National Coalition for the Homeless and is the founder of the Universal Living Wage Campaign. Mr. Troxell advocates for the rights of homeless persons on the National, State and Local levels and has been instrumental in focusing attention on the plight of homeless persons. |

Outstanding Homeless Coalition:
Victoria Coalition for the Homeless
Since the mid-90’s the Victoria Coalition for the Homeless has been collaborating to leverage and advocate for resources for homeless families and individuals. Though not formalized, the Coalition joined forces to submit a successful application to HUD for Continuum of Care Funding; a dream coalition members have had for years. Founder and former president of the Victoria Coalition for the Homeless Gail Brocklebank says, “The hardest thing to deal with at monthly coalition meetings is finding enough chairs.”

Barbara Wand James
Director, Texas Homeless Education Office
Austin, Texas
Ms. James is the Director of the Texas Homeless Education Office and is past-president of the National Alliance for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth. Ms. James is an advocate for homeless persons and has substantial impact on homeless policy and procedure in Texas and around the nation. Ms. James is tireless in advocating for the rights of homeless children, unaccompanied youth and their families. Ms. James is an advisory member to the Texas Homeless Network Board of Directors and the Texas Interagency Council for the Homeless.
